South African’s love affair with SUV’s is as strong as ever. Whether it’s the magnificent Fortuner or the equally impressive RAV4 – SUV’s are the vehicle of choice for families, couples and even the solo-adventurer.
There’s ample room for long or short journeys. You also tend to feel safer in an SUV, with increased height and size. I believe there’s one more reason though – Our beautiful and vast outdoors. SUV’s allow us to experience this rich land by propelling us and our equipment towards the next adventure.
Toyota now plants itself in the middle of the growing SUV market, with the upcoming Urban Cruiser. The new crossover joins models like the VW T Cross, Ford Ecosport and Hyundai Venue in what is referred to as the ‘mini crossover’ segment. What this boils down to – is you get an authentic SUV lifestyle at the price of a regular sedan or hatchback. Official prices are yet to be released, but rumour has it that the Urban Cruiser range will start around the R250,000 mark, a price that will appeal to many, many people.
Starting with the exterior, the Urban Cruiser is simple yet elegant. In a world where automotive design is often met with jagged edges and unnecessary angles, the smooth, modern design and selection of delicious colours allow you to express yourself with unique looks that match your personality.
Generous black cladding, offroad-style wheel arches and substantial ground clearance give the mini SUV a strong, capable presence.
Standard features include LED lined headlights that ensure your arrival is noteworthy. 16 inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, In-car WiFi, a Push Start button and a 7-inch touchscreen along with Android Auto and Apple Car Play are also standard.
The top of the range Urban Cruiser XR model features additional comforts such as a reverse camera, LED fog lamps, cruise control, automatic lights and rain sensors, an aircon cooled glovebox – and dual-tone colours. Any more features than this – and you may as well be piloting a Boeing 747.
Stepping inside, the Urban Cruiser greets you with the colourful hue of the large infotainment screen and gauges that let you know you’re driving a modern, high-tech vehicle. Supportive, comfortable seats and well-thought ergonomics ensure your commute is as pleasant as can be. It seats 5 occupants with plenty of legroom and breathing space. And the 328-litre boot has oodles of space to fit all you’ll ever need for fun family adventures.
The compact SUV comes to life where it matters most. Built on the Suzuki Vitara Breza framework, a car that has been super-successful in harsh driving conditions like India, the Urban Cruiser gives you a smooth, solid driving experience whether that’s on the tarmac or dirt roads.
The 1.5l, 77kw engine picks up rev easily and has enough power to climb Van Reenen’s pass or Chapmans Peak. Acceleration is also strong for those rapid overtake maneuvres.
You can order your Urban Cruiser in either a 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic specification. Both options give you superb fuel efficiency. Expect to get between 17 – 18 kms per litre of fuel, meaning more cash back in your pocket!
The legendary Toyota aftercare is standard with the Urban Cruiser. You’re covered with a 4-service /60,000 km service plan and a 3-year /100,000 km warranty, which is good at any of the 220 Toyota dealerships across South Africa.
