The Magical Hilux 2018 Spec Update

There’s not much wrong with the new Hilux…But one of the few gripes people did have – was, “Where are those cool LED lights we see on the international pics?!”

Well their prayers were just answered, with the latest Hilux spec update. In comes those much-prayed-for LED headlamps (with daytime running LED strips along the top – which look stunning ) , new 18″ alloys, LED fog lamps, and the introduction of a 4X4 Automatic in the 2.4 GD Hilux model lineup. This is a perfect entry point for new 4×4 enthusiasts.

Here’s what one 4x4community.co.za member had to say about the 2.4 Hilux motor. The 2.4 GD6 is comparable in power & torque to the previous 3.0 D4D powerhouse, yet with advances in engine design — is a fuel-sipper of a meagre 8.2L/100 kms!quote-left

Great move by Toyota. That 2,4 GD6 is a jewel of an engine, used in top spec Hilux and Tunas in lots of countries. P. Oosthuizen

So what else is new on the Hilux Spec Upgrade?

There’s a bunch of safety features like traction control, hill start assist & trailer sway control added to the SR & SRX range – which wasn’t previously included.

All Double Cab Raider Hilux’s now come standard with a 220v socket – so you can finally take the fridge along on those scorching camp trips! Then there’s the addition of 6 new automatic models to the Single, Xtra and Double Cab range.  Here’s details taken from Car Magazine’s feature on the update:

The first three new derivatives fall in the diesel-powered single-cab bakkie category. The 2,8 GD-6 RB Raider AT single-cab comes in at R435 700, while the 2,4 GD-6 4×4 SRX AT single-cab is priced at R436 800 and the 2,8 GD-6 4×4 Raider AT single-cab at R497 400.

In addition, Toyota SA Motors has added two new self-shifting variants to its Xtra-cab range: the 2,8 GD-6 RB Raider AT Xtra-cab (R462 200) and the 2,8 GD-6 4×4 Raider AT Xtra-cab (R525 800).

Finally, in the double-cab line-up, the automaker has linked its automatic transmission to the 2,4-litre turbodiesel engine, resulting in the 2,4 GD-6 4×4 SRX AT double-cab, priced at R495 700. The news comes after the brand quietly added a new 2,4 GD-6 4×4 AT model to its Fortuner range.[/thrive_text_block]

While writing this blog post, I took a break for a bit of fresh air – when I noticed this new spec Hilux in our car-park. So I whipped out my smartphone and snapped these photos – hence the not-so-professional quality. Further down I’ve included a gallery of better quality pics taken by Toyota’s photographers.

Notice that LED eyeliner? Beautiful!

There are a few other minor changes – the fabric door arm-rests have been replaced with a more hard-wearing urethane trim. Raider models now come with a leather lined centre console. All 4X4 models feature Active Traction Control, while the manual Raider models come with Toyota’s revolutionary iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission)  — A manual transmission developed to accommodate the sophisticated torque system in thenew engines, where the transmission speed is matched to the engine speed, contributing to smoother gear changes.

Well there you have it! Let us know in the comments what you think of the updated Hilux. And enjoy the gallery further down. All new Hilux’s come standard with a 5 year/90,000 km service plan and a 3 year/100,000 km warranty.

More cool hilux’s!

Before you go, here are three amazing custom Hilux’s for you to drool on. The Hilux has a cult following across the globe – and as a celebration of 50 years of Hilux magic – various tuners have dressed the Hilux up, with breathtaking results.

  • hi i think its great that the 2.4 SRX now comes with auto i believe a lot of people will flock to purchase it ,any chance that the srx will like the the sr will have the same driver aids and the all so critical 7 airbags ,unlike the "MINE SPEC" SR i believe the SRX needs them more as families will choose it as a value for money bakkie compared to the 2.8 ,a lot of little children will be transported in this bakkie doesn't toyota care for their safety? SRX is more expensive than the SR but has fewer airbags and general driver aids ,why ??

    • Good points Tshepo!

For example - in the Hilux Single Cab range - there are 13 model derivatives. The SR model comes in 4X4 Manual - and includes extra safety features like stability control, traction control & trailer sway control. it also costs more than the regular SRX 4X2 Manual model.

So between the 13 derivatives - we'd like you to choose the model that makes the most sense for your use case. But transporting kids in the back of a bakkie - is definitely not recommended - and has recently been made illegal (assuming you're referring to the single cab!).

      Thank you for your comments!

    • Hi Clive!

The list price as it stands is: R529,300.

But we have a special on right now. It's our Amazon edition, which comes with the following extras: leather seats, nudge bar + roll bar. All in for R494,900

You can check the special out at: http://durbansouthtoyota.co.za/specials

      Thanks :)

  • The 2.4 GD6 DC SRX comes with boring 17inch wheels which makes the vehicle look like it is still the old model. Quite similar to D4D even. The 2.8 is styled with diamond cut 18's which are extremely sporty and makes the Ranger look 10 years behind. Is it an option to purchase the 2.4 with these 18's instead? If so what would a reasonable price be? Thank you.
