Hijacking tips for staying safe

Hijacking is no fun. Especially for the victims of this heinous crime.

The worst part about experiencing hijacking is reliving the incident and constantly reflecting on it after it had happened. It’s not something you can prevent from happening.

All traumatic incidents have some form of post trauma, and hijacking is certainly no exception.

So we decided to give our clients, fans, followers and blog readers a few pointers on how to stay safe during a hijacking.

Yes we know some people act heroic or you may have watched the Youtube video where the lady in the Mercedes SUV reverses away from the hijackers. But please read further and take heed to what we are trying to teach you.

Think of this as a course named “Hijacking 101”

  1. Do not do or say anything to turn the hijacker hostile. Anything can happen in the heat of the moment during a hijacking and you the victim always get the short end of the stick. So no antagonizing.
  2. Surrender to the hijacker in a visible manner that shows you are not going to make any sudden moves. Lift your arms. Make sure they can see your hands.
  3. Your car will most probably be in gear. Shift to neutral and slowly undo your seatbelt using only your left hand. You want the hijackers to see that you comply.
  4. Don’t switch your engine off during a hijacking. This could become a reason to hurt you – so don’t.
  5. Avoid direct eye contact during the hijacking. You may be suspected of attempting to identify your attackers later and that could also become a reason to hurt you. Maybe even take your life.
  6. If you have passengers, open the backdoor and let the passengers get out calmly and orderly. Remember no antagonizing.
  7. If you have a small child in the car, let the perpetrators know that you will be taking the child out. Lean in slowly and remove the child from the car.
  8. Walk away from the car as fast as you can without running. This may save your life.

There you have it. 8 points that may save your life in a dire situation. Hijacking is no joke and in many instances the perpetrators are desperate to get their hands on your vehicle. That desperation can trigger any sort of unintended activity. Their nervousness can cause them to squeeze the trigger of a handgun and wound you fatally. They may hurt you for no reason just to show you they mean business. So comply with everything and don’t try and be a hero. Let the vehicle go and stay alive. Your life is more important than anything else.

Remember – hijacking is no joke.
