Has Toyota Just Made The Cutest Sports Car…Ever?

Yellow never looked this good!

It’s hard to disagree with that title. I mean – just look at it. It’s like that little toy car we always wanted, in the flesh!

Top Gear had this to say about it: “A collective ‘ahhhhh’, everyone. This is the adorable Toyota S-FR, and we want to give it a big hug and ruffle its hair.”

The eye-catching S-FR Concept (which stands for Small, Front-Engine, Rear-Drive) premiered at this years Tokyo Auto Show. And while the car’s still a concept, there is a growing call around the world, for Toyota to fast-track it to production.

Pitched in a size below the ’86, it retains the same front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, but on a smaller scale. Details on the mini-coupe’s internals are scarce, but rumour has it that the S-FR will be powered by a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine, which should be good for around 96kw. And with a body weighing just under a ton, that should be ample power to bring this little sputnik to life!

In fact, Toyota’s racing arm, Gazoo Racing, has already given the S-FR an injection of its racing DNA.

The Gazoo Racing edition S-FR. Doesn’t it just say “attitude!”

“It’s longer and wider than before, owing to the extra aerodynamic treatment. Its bodykit comprises all the proper, grown-up racing car stuff – front splitter, dive planes, monster diffuser, gargantuan rear wing – and all of it made from light carbonfibre-reinforced plastic. In gaining them, it’s also gained the scowl of an upset pug. We like that.” said Top Gear again.

The S-FR is actually the lower end of a 3-pronged sports car lineup, that includes the GT-86 above it and the upcoming Supra successor (which is being developed together with BMW) above the 86.

Would you buy this little rocket if it does end up in production? Maybe we should start a hashtag campaign 🙂 #S-FRMustCome

If your mouth’s not yet salivating – wait till you see it in action in this video!
